In a bid to boost the collection of revenue and charting a roadmap for achieving the target, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be holding a review-cum-strategy,high-level meeting with top Income Tax commissionerson Thursday.
A senior IT official informed that all Chief Commissioners of IT departments and Principal Chief Commissioners across the nation have been invited by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to mark their presence at the meeting, in Delhi.
These officers have also been asked by the CBDT to prepare updated and latest reports about the status of revenue collections of their respective zones before the meeting. The official also reported that among heaps of problems that stand in the way of effective revenue collection, the Finance Minister will review the dearth of tax collectionunder Tax Deducted at Source classification.
K.V. Chowdary, the CBDT Chairman, for gauging the significance of the matter held a video conferencesitting with the top IT officerson Tuesday and asked them to be on their toes now to make sure that a much bigger chunk of revenue is collected under the TDS category. Referring to a CBDT data, the officials said that the TDS collections that was 14.5 per centduring the same period last year, is this year lagging behind at 9.3 per cent.
“The high level meeting on Thursday will discuss threadbare about these issues which are posing a challenge to the revenue work. The CBDT has asked all cadre controlling chief commissioners to prepare the latest data of tax collection in their regions which should be updated till October 20 and this would be presented to the FM,”said the officer.
He further that the meeting will not be restricted to taking stock of what all has been done until now, but will also include steps on strategizing how to boost these efforts in the future.
