Alarmed over the recent incidences of misuse of social media and cyber attacks on government installations, government has approved setting up of study group of experts to combat and prevent cyber crimes. This expert group will chalk out a detailed and comprehensive plan to prevent cyber attacks and also to nab the culprits involved with cyber crimes. The members of the expert study group have been chosen from senior and experienced academicians in the field of cyber security and computer sciences. These experts will give their recommendations on all aspects of cyber crimes that will be considered and later implemented by the government. The order to constitute such an expert study group was given by the Union Home Ministry yesterday after Home Minister Rajnath Singh gave his approval.
There have been many cases of misuse of social media in recent past
There have been many instances of misuse of social media, in particular the use of Twitter to indoctrinate youth of the country to join terror groups. India is a fast developing country that remains vulnerable to cyber attacks and cyber crimes. This is why the government is trying to an environment that is free of such cyber crimes. In the last 2-3 years alone, there has been in increase of nearly 40% per annum in such cyber crimes.
The Expert Study Group that has been constituted includes the following members.
- Dr. Rajat Moona, Director General CDAC, Pune
- Dr. Gulshan Rai, Director General Cert-In
- Dr. D Dass, Professor, IIIT Bangalore
- Professor Krishnan, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
- Dr. Manindra Aggarwal, Professor Computer Science, IIT Kanpur
Shri Ashok Kumar Alok, who is the Joint Secretary (Secretary State), MHA has been given the responsibility of the convener of this expert study group.
This Expert Study Group has been provided with a few terms of reference that are as follows.
- To prepare a comprehensive plan for tackling of cyber crimes in India
- To give recommendations on all aspects of cyber crimes
- To suggest partnerships with organizations in public as well as private sector
- To suggest other steps or measure that can be adopted to bring down the incidences of cyber crimes
The plan of the government is to ultimately involve NGOs, both national as well as international, to this expert study group.
Government sprung into action after MPs raised their concerns
The announcement for the constitution of this Expert Study group comes days after some MPs raised their concerns over increasing cases of cyber crimes and cyber attacks in India. This was in particular to the arrest of a youth called Mehdi Masroor, who has been alleged to have been working as handler of Twitter account of terror organization ISIS. In response, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had assured the members of the house that government would soon adopt measures to strengthen monitoring of these crimes and also to take steps to prevent these incidents in future.
