In the list of 189 countries, released by World Bank today, India has been placed at 142nd position on basis of ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in the country. India’s ranking has slipped two places since last year.
The drop in the rank experienced by India, from the 140th position, can be owed to better performance exhibited by other countries, the officials form the bank said.
Where the country had scored 53.97 points last year, this year it managed to grab 52.78 points.
The latest reports and ranks have not taken into account the steps taken by the Modi Government for making India a business friendly destination.
World Bank’s Development Economics based Global Indicators Group head, Augusto Lopez-Claros said, “We do not want to send the impression that the drop in India’s ranking is connected in any way with the current political situation (government).”
He further said, “It is absolutely true that the new government of Modi has made it very clear that they see the creation of a better investment climate and a more friendly business friendly environment in India a top priority. However, it is important to remember that the new Government did not come into office until the second half of May.”
The World Bank officials were however, quite appreciative of the measures introduced by the new BJP Government and even said that the country stands a good chance jumping up the rank-list in the next report pertaining to ease of doing business.
