With every useful technology comes fraudulent technological activities too. The way plastic money reduced the need of carrying cash everywhere, Automated Teller Machines made it easier to withdraw cash from any place where the machines are installed. CCTV cameras and security guards too, sometimes, are unable to catch the fraud when it’s happening.
There have been several reports in news on how various tricks are used at ATMs. There have been many scams on ATMs, like- shoulder surfing trick, skimmer trick, sleek trick at cash, thermo-cam trick, sleek trick at pouch, glue stick trick, matchstick trick and many more, which help the fraud masters to attain cash from dispenser machines. Apart from these, robbers have threatened people in ATMs to give them money from their accounts, and at sometimes thieves have stolen the machine itself.
Recently traced fraudulent trick is that, accused placed their hand on exit shutter from where the cash is dispensed, which triggered message stating shutter fault, which forwarded inside to the switch of ATM. And that causes the transaction to reverse in switch, which is the accused’s requested amount that is debited from account, gets back credited into account immediately.
And on releasing the exit shutter, the amount requested previously would be dispensed from the ATM, this is because, during dispensing processthere was a manual halt. This process is loss for the concerned bank, as the amount has not been debited which did not decrease the balance from their account.
Investigation was conducted internally, when suspicious and heavy losses were faced by Corporation Bank, then it was found, how huge fraud has been taking place and it was immediately informed to the company which was contracted for cash refilling at its ATMs.
CMS Info Systems was also communicated about this fraud along with transaction particulars of fraudulent activities, like- video clippings, snapshots, details of card, and electronic journal copies. Inquiry by CMS Info Systems itself, found ATM cards of salary accounts of 15 of its employees were used for fraud tricks.
Shankar Pawar informed mirror, “Police complaint is filed, investigations are being held. Our team of technical experts along with main service provider of bank are taking preventive measures to ensure that the activity does not repeat. And to assess the exact lost amount during tricky transactions, our legal experts are working.
Additional mechanisms for security at level of server had also been implemented, as stated by sources that are highly placed with Corporation Bank. One of them stated. “Necessary measures have been taken up to stop the fraudulent trick from repeating in future. Our servers are also strengthened now, which will be able to block this particular technique of scams that will keep a check inside ATM kiosks and customers attempting for any such trick. And usually, a person can commit such tricks up till five or maximum ten transactions, exceeding which will block their accounts.”
The fifteen employees were working together in a group and they have identified a way out to trace, trap such tricky server at a great level. That will limit the amount to be dispensed daily. Senior police officer stated, “Under 418, 34 and 420 section of Indian Penal Code, the complaint has been registered. The case is transferred to squad of CCB’S F&M for inquiry. CMS Info Systems has submitted an amount of Rs.66.58 lacs in its complaint.”
