The Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh will be attending the 3rd Interpol Ministerial Meeting and General Assembly in Monaco on Monday. He is expected to pursue support for matters that have international implications, including cases relating to terror.
The Home Minister will be accompanied by a three member delegation comprising two Home ministry officials and Ranjit Sinha, Director of CBI.
There are reports that India might look out for a permanent berth the General Secretariat of Interpol since despite being one of the oldest members, India doesn’t have a senior representative in the body. Recently, India had nominated Ranjit Sinha for the post of Interpol’s General Secretary, but he lost the chance to Juergen Stock of Germany.
The motive of the Interpol Ministerial Meeting is titled ‘Turn Back Crime: 100 years of International Police Cooperation’.
In the meeting, the Indian officials will be seen deliberating on India’s role in international crimes like narco-terrorism, human trafficking, terrorism and cybercrimes
The Indian delegation also wants to bring up other important issues and highlight critical challenges that the police faces while reacting to the present and rapidly developing criminal phenomena. They will also be discussing the best ways to counter such challenges with the help of international and national experience
A crucial meet for CBI:
National Central Bureau of Interpol in India is in fact the CBI of the country, which will try to persuade other countries to speed up the execution of Letter Rogatories, which remains pending in many nations. Many significant cases which are under the CBI’s probe presently are stuck because of non-cooperation from countries which are members of Interpol.
Background Check:
The First Interpol Ministerial Meeting was held at Singapore on October 11-12, 2009 and its aim was ‘To Strengthen the Role of Police in Peacekeeping Operations’.
The second Interpol Ministerial Meeting was held at Rome, Italy on November 05-08, 2012 and its aim was ‘Changes for Police Facing Contemporary Criminal Violence’.
France and Israel visits on cards:
According to statements given by ministry officials, Mr. Singh is expected to visit Israel and France to discuss bilateral issues pertaining to security on his way back from the meeting. Particularly during his visit to Israel, the Union Home Minister is expected to ratify a number of bilateral agreements on security cooperation between India and Israel.
During his stint in Israel, Mr. Singh will be meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York more than a month back. At the time of that meeting, when he was asked about the prospects of cooperation between the two countries, PM Netanyahu had said that “sky is the limit in seeking greater and greater” ties with India.
Back in 2000, LK Advani had visited Tel Aviv, which marked an upswing in bilateral cooperation. That was the last time that the Indian Home Minister had visited Israel.
Mr. Netanyahu was among first global leaders to call Modi to congratulate him over his victory in Lok Sabha polls.
