In a unique and star studded oath taking ceremony, the 44-year-old Devendra Fadnavis former RSS affiliate was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Friday. This is the first time in the history that the BJP has formed government in the State.
Many important political figures including Gujrat CM Anandiben Patel and Haryana CM M.L. Khattar congratulated the new chief minister of Maharashtra via twitter.
In a splendid function at Wankhede Stadium, Mr. Fadnavis was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao. The function saw the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled States and those governed by allies and several of his Cabinet colleagues among others.
Apart from Mr. Fadnavis, 2 Ministers of State and 7 Cabinet Ministers also took the oath.
Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray, who had earlier announced that he will not attend the eminent event owing to the disregard shown by BJP towards Sena while carrying out talks for forming a coalition government, was also spotted at the function. His presence at the event following a last minute call by party President Amit Shah indicated at possible rapprochement between the two estranged parties.
Mr. Thackeray was seen shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries with Prime Minister Modi.
The Cabinet Ministers who swore in are:
Sudhir Mungantiwar, Pankaja Munde, Eknath Khadse, Vinod Tawde, Vishnu Savar, Prakash Mehta and Chandrakant Patil; most of them being BJP’s State Core Committee members.
Vidya Thakur and Dilip Kamble were sworn in as Ministers of State.
Among others, BJP Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat and Rajasthan, Raman Singh, Manohar Parrikar, Anandiben Patel, Vasundhara Raje, respectively graced the occasion.
Other than these ministers, BJP patriarch L.K. Advani and Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Ravishanker Prasad, Prakash Javadekar and Radhamohan Singh were also present at the ceremony.
Among the BJP allies, N. Chandrababu Naidu of Andhra Pradesh and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also attended the function.
After the Sena’s Manohar Joshi, Mr. Fadnavis happens to be only the second Brahmin Chief Minister in Maharashtra, the state which is by and large dominated by Maratha politicians.
Fadnavis hails from Vidarbha region and is the fourth politician from there to become Chief Minister.
Also, he has become the 27th Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the 18th person to hold the post.
