Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a scheme of LED bulb distribution in Delhi by himself replacing an incandescent bulb with an LED bulb in South Block building. Describing LED bulb as Prakash Path, the Prime Minister urged people to switch over to this very efficient lighting system to conserve energy. He said that conserving energy is easier and cheaper than producing it. It is estimated that if all bulbs in South Block are replaced with LED bulbs, there will be an annual saving of more than 7000 units of electricity.
Modi urged people to start gifting LED bulbs to each other on the occasion of New Year
Modi appealed people to refrain from gifting other things to each other on the occasion of New Year. Instead of giving objects like pens, diaries, and calendars, people should gift each other LED bulbs as they would consumer much less energy and thus help in conserving energy for the nation. The scheme launched by the Prime Minister is called Domestic Efficient Lighting Program or simply DELP and the same program will be implemented throughout the country for domestic lighting and street lighting.
LED bulbs are very efficient and also have a very long life span
Speaking on the occasion, Modi said that LED bulbs are much more efficient than incandescent bulb and CFL as they have a life span more than 50 times the ordinary bulbs. They also consume a very small fraction of energy consumed by incandescent bulbs. A web based scheme has been introduced in Delhi where people can register and get LED bulbs at a down payment of just Rs. 10 per bulb. The rest of the cost of the bulb (which is being supplied at just Rs. 130) will be adjusted in the monthly bill of the consumers for a period of one year. This means that people can replaces all their bulbs and CFLs being used in households at once and pay on a monthly basis. Because of bulk procurement, government is able to supply LED bulbs at such low prices. The market price of these bulbs is around Rs. 350.
He appealed to celebrities to get involved with energy conservation program
Government aims to replace ordinary bulbs being used in homes and street lighting with LED bulbs in a phased manner by 2016. Every LED bulb used by a household is estimated to lead to an annual saving of Rs. 162. The bulbs supplied by government would carry a warranty of 3 years. Modi said that this is just the beginning, but if people of India show their resolve, India can become self reliant in the field of energy and there will never be any shortage of electricity in all parts of the country. He added that celebrities and other prominent personalities should associate themselves with energy conservation program to encourage people to switch to LED bulbs.
Manufacturers need to rise to meet the challenge
If most people switch over to LED bulbs, it would present a challenge to the manufacturers as they will be required to produce this efficient mode of lighting in huge quantities while keeping the quality high. “These programs launched today also represent a challenge to manufacturers, to rise to the occasion, and produce LED bulbs without any compromise on quality,’’ he said.
Power Minister Piyush Goyal said that if all 77 crore incandescent bulbs being used in India get replaced by LED bulbs; there would be a saving of more than 26 KWh of energy every year. He suggested linking Aadhar card with DELP to ensure transparency and to avoid duplication.
