Prime Minister Modi is a man in a hurry, hopping from one place to another not just inside the country but even abroad. Not content with addressing election rallies in the sates of J&K and Jharkhand that are facing polls, the man of action was in Guwahati this morning to attend a security meet. He was addressing the 49th DGPs and IGPs conference here. He is on a tour to North east where he will inaugurate a train line from Meghalaya to Assam, and a power project in Tripura besides taking time out to attend festivals in Manipur and Nagaland. North east is one region of India where BJP does not have a strong presence, leave aside having a government in place in any of these 7 states called the sisters of the North East.
Addressing the conference, Modi said that he was in favor of SMART policing. He clarified what he meant by the acronym SMART. According to him,
Modi feels that if the police force around the country starts believing in these values and qualities, there is no power in the world that can stop Indian police from becoming one of the best and most efficient. Inculcating these values will go a long way in improving the image of the police force that has taken a beating in recent times.
He said the need of the hour for police around the country was efficient and effective intelligence. Effective intelligence network alone would help the police force in a big way as it would be able to nab the culprits and easily maintain law and order which is its prime responsibility.
Speaking on the occasion, Modi said that more than 33000 police personnel have laid their lives while performing their duty since independence. This is too large a number of sacrifices to be ignored or overlooked. He urged the department to publish a book containing stories of bravery of these police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the service to the nation. By reading the biographies of their brave brethren, new recruits would get a lot of inspiration and confidence. He also asked police department to formulate a protocol to honor the sacrifice of a police officer. The last rites of a police officer killed while performing his duty should be performed with great respect and honor. This will send right signals to the people of the society. Let the people know that “they had died on duty for the safety and security of the common man“.
Modi talked about the welfare of the police force and said that a police office can perform to his best capabilities only when he knows that the requirements of his family are being kept well. There is a lot of stress and tension in the life of a police officer. ‘Unless we ensure that there is peace and stability in their family, they cannot give their full to the society,’ said Modi.
