Narendra Modi has been described as a man of action by no less a person than US President Obama himself. He is certainly living up to this reputation by conducting whirlwind tours of many countries in a short span of time. He is currently on the 2nd leg of his 10 day visit to Myanmar, Australia, and Fiji. Today he arrived in Brisbane to take part in the 2-day G20 summit that begins on Saturday. G-20 is a group of some of the most powerful and developed countries of the world and by participating in this group, Modi wants to send clear signals to the world that India has finally arrived on the world scene.
Not a man to waste any time by staying at the hotel, Modi got ready quickly after checking in the hotel and went to attend a program in Queensland University of Technology. He evinced great interest in joint Indo-Australian studies and programs and also addressed a large group of students inside the University. He inspected an agro robot and wrote ‘research is the mother of development’ in Hindi. This robot is a light weight device that has the potential to replace heavy tractor at farms as it can do all the functions performed by a tractor.
Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Australia after Rajiv Gandhi who came here way back in 1986. After attending the G-20 summit, Modi is slated to visit three other Australian cities namely Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney. He is expected to hold bilateral talks with many world leaders on the sidelines of the summit. In fact, he is scheduled to meet UK Prime Minister David Cameron today. Other important leaders on the list of PM Modi are German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French PM Francois Hollande, and of course the Australian PM Tony Abbott.
Nearly 80% of the world trade is controlled by the countries that make up G-20. More than 85% of economic production also comes from the countries. At the G20 summit, Modi is expected to raise his concerns about the menace of black money and give his suggestions to enhance cooperation between countries on this issue. Modi is also expected to emphasize creation of jobs for the youth as development of infrastructure should not be done at the cost of jobs for the people. Modi will also discuss how to produce clean and cheap energy for development.
Australian PM Tony Abbott will engage in bilateral talks with Modi in Canberra. He will also give a grand reception in honor of PM Modi that will take place in the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Modi is also scheduled to address a joint session of the Australian Parliament.
India is interested in a deep and strong friendship with Australia. Modi wants to increase cooperation with Australia in the field of security and intelligence sharing. Both countries recently signed a deal under which Australia will sell enriched Uranium to India. Modi is keen on increasing bilateral trade between India and Australia that seems to have stagnated in recent past.
