Obama Vs. Cybersecurity – Is It Time for Another Cyber Attack?
President Barack Obama has been discussing the state of cyber security for a while now. A couple of weeks ago, he made announcements concerning the signature and approval of a new executive order that will supposedly protect governments and businesses from possible cyber attacks in near future.
It is believed that Al-Qaeda, or some other terrorist organization is aiming to execute a mass level cyber attack to disrupt all possible computer and network operated entities in the U.S. of A. Of course, if something like that were to happen, it would cause a wide scale financial and infrastructure damage.
The executive order that was signed by Barack Obama is slightly weaker than what the administration had proposed during the president’s last term. Two years ago, a key provision and some important points that were part of the last bill – They are not included in the latest version.
Military executives have warned that hackers have now become more than capable of either damaging or completely bringing down “critical infrastructure” with the click of a mouse. As already stated earlier in this report, such incident can deal a serious blow to the U.S. economy, electricity and power supply throughout the country, sewerage system and so much more…
The latest executive security order does not mandate the use of security protocols. In fact, the order says minimum security standards will have to be followed. Companies that will adhere to these protocols will receive incentives to help stay on track.
Last time, during the State of the Union address, the president said that seeing to the critical security situation these days, there is no time to waste. “We know hackers steal people’s identities and infiltrate private emails.” Furthermore, the president continued during his keynote speech by adding, “We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, and our air traffic control system.”
Speaking of foreign enemies, one of the articles at ‘The National’ shed some light on recent cyber security situation in China. According to Chinese Defense executives, the U.S. forces are carrying out brute attacks against the Chinese IT infrastructure. At the same time, the United States military officials are sharing the same views against China when it comes to Chinese hackers hacking into the U.S. computer networks.
Tom Kellermann, former member of the bipartisan Commissions on Cyber Security said, it is a significant step forward, but it won’t be as impactful as the legislation itself. Meanwhile the stiff necks and big shots at Senior administration level are promising all kinds of things to ensure that common American citizens will remain safe and sound post the recent cyber security executive order’s approval.
This executive order is a direct/indirect result of a number of incidents involving companies and government level organizations getting hacked over the last few years. On an overall scale, a change has to be implemented once and for all.
