In a shocking concluding report, the CBI has said that the Badaun sisters whose bodies were found hanging from a tree 6 months ago in mysterious circumstances were not gang raped and killed. They committed suicide on their own because of their affair with a man from the village that was objected to by their family members. This conclusion by the CBI has shocked most people as it was believed that these cousin sisters were gang raped and murdered by some men.
The incident shocked the nation and brought a bad name for the country
The incident that took place in May this year in a small village in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh shocked the entire nation. The gory visuals of the bodies hanging from the tree were displayed on various channels for a long time and UP government and police department were severely criticized by not just political parties but also common people for the inaction and poor law and order situation in the state.
The original story
Two minor girls (cousins) aged 15 and 14 were fund hanging from a tree after a day they were reported missing by their family members. Autopsies conducted soon afterwards confirmed the fact that they were raped and murdered before hanging their bodies. There was a lot of hue and cry after family members alleged that these girls were gang raped and killed by 5 men of a family of the village. They also alleged that police refused to lodge an FIR as they were on the side of the criminals and wanted to protect them as they were of a high caste while the girls came from a lower caste family.
CBI comes into play
The news of Badaun case spread like wildfire and the UP government was forced to request CBI to take over its probe. CBI found that the reports confirming rape were doubtful. The agency tried to exhume the bodies from graves but its efforts had to be abandoned when water levels in Ganga river rose alarmingly and submerged the graves. CBI later denied any sexual harassment also when forensic reports from a Hyderabad based laboratory found there were no fingerprints or DNA marks on the bodies and clothes of the two sisters. The agency subjected the families of the girls and the witnesses to lie detector tests. It was found that the main witness had lied about having seen the girls being dragged into the fields by the suspects. It was on the basis of his statement that the 4 suspects were arrested and charged with this heinous crime.
CBI Director Ranjit Sinha said that CBI had successfully cracked the case. He said, ‘Our probe found that the two girls had committed suicide and weren’t murdered. The local police had erroneously conducted their probe along the lines that the sisters were killed.’ Based upon these findings, CBI is likely to file a concluding report today. Ranjit Sinha does not enjoy a very good reputation himself as he was criticized by the Supreme Court recently for his dubious role in conducting the coal scam and the 2G cases.
