It may have been said to embarrass the Prime Minister but the move seems to have backfired as former UPA Minister Salman Khurshid is being criticized for his comments. He told ANI that it was ‘easy to gather Indian crowd and give speeches’. He even asked media personnel to check the flight tickets to substantiate his claims. ‘I have been to Myanmar, streets are deserted and empty, and Modi must have taken along many.’ Khurshid said.
By making these comments, Salman has not exactly covered himself with glory. He is not likely to rise high in the eyes of the High Command (read Sonia Gandhi) either. This type of cheap politics doesn’t befit the stature of a former External Affairs Minister, many feel. He has angered many in Australia also, with some of them saying that they have been hurt by these dirty comments.

Even if Salman is right and it is really easy to amass supporters in a foreign country, what stopped the earlier Prime Ministers of India from arranging crowds during their foreign trips earlier? Manmohan Singh paid visits to so many countries in the past but nowhere was he flanked and greeted by people of Indian origin in the manner that they have been doing so to welcome Narendra Modi. If anything, these remarks made by a seasoned politician like Mr. Salman Khurshid reflect his resentment and jealousy. In fact, by making such comments, he is only telling the world that he is envious and worried by the kind of support and popularity that Modi enjoys among Indians living abroad.
If we assume that Khurshid is right, Modi can take along with him only a few dozen of Indians to foreign countries. But there were not dozens but hundreds, and even thousands of Modi supporters in Nepal, Myanmar, Japan, US, and now in Australia. There were thousands of Indians at the Roma Street Park in Brisbane yesterday where Modi unveiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. More than 25000 people of Indian community are believed to attend his public address in Sydney today. Are all these people those that have been bought by BJP, as claimed by Salman Khurshid?

If Modi is carrying hundreds of his supporters along with him to all the foreign trips that he has been making, it is certainly a scam and Mr. Khurshid has every right to raise this issue as a scam during the winter session of the Parliament. But Khurshid will not do it and thus it is only reflective of irrational and childish behavior that he is showing. Being a former External Affairs Minister, he should have the courtesy of refraining from saying something bad about the Prime Minister of the country, especially when he is in the midst of a foreign trip.
