On Thursday, 6th November during a naval exercise, a Torpedo recovery vessel of the Indian navy sunk killing one sailor while four went missing. The Search and Rescue Ships (SAR) were immediately dispatched in the area and rescued 23 people safely. This accident occurred at around 8 pm and nearly 28 personnel were there on the board.
The Navy said that the vessel was on a routine mission to recuperate torpedoes fired by armada boats during a routine exercise, when it encountered flooding in one of its compartments. The navy officials also mentioned that the incident occurred when the ship was back on its way after collecting dummy torpedo that was made use of in the exercise. It is also said that the incident happened 10-15 km away from the Vizag post.
The TRV or Torpedo recovery Vessel is used to recover Torpedoes fired by fleet ships and submarines. This 23 meters long ship and 6.5 meters at the beam was built by the Goa Shipyard and served Indian navy for the last 31 years. Built is 1983, the sinking of the ship came as a tragic loss to the navy. This is one of the many accident faced by the India Navy since last year. A series of resignation was followed since last year then with DK Doshi resigning the post of Navy Chief following a series of accidents.
This was followed by resignation of another navy chief Admiral Joshi after a fire in INS Sindhuratna that took lives of two sailors. Thus incident happened in the month of April this year. Again on 31st October this year, INS Kora suffered a minor damage due to scrapping by a merchant vessel. This news left many stunned and a question arose in the minds of many regarding the safety.
The loss of the life of the sailor cannot be repaired, but surely the officials can be more attentive and employ additional security levels to ensure safety of the ships as well as that of the sailors and people in the board.
