Mullah Mohammad Omar, who was the head of state of Afghanistan for 5 years from 1996-2001 and the supreme spiritual leader of the Taliban, is alive and hiding in Pakistan. This has been revealed by a top official in Afghan intelligence agency. This is something that has been said by American and other western intelligence agencies for quite some time. Mullah Omar was declared a wanted terrorist by America for sheltering Osama bin Laden for many years prior to the 9/11 attacks.
Afghanistan believes he is alive and hiding in Karachi
Rehmatullah Nabil, who is the acting Chief of Afghan Intelligence Agency, said, “There is a lot of doubt whether he is alive or not. But we are more confident that he is in Karachi.” He was talking to a reporter from New York Times and said this in response to a question on the whereabouts of this reclusive Taliban leader. There is a broad consensus among all branches of Afghan security forces that Mullah Omar is alive and living in Karachi in Pakistan. “Not only do they think he’s alive, they say they have a good understanding of where exactly he is in Karachi,” added Nabil.
He is getting shelter from local Mullahs
Mullah Omar was believed to be more of an ideologue and a spiritual leader of the Taliban rather than being an operational commander. The latest revelation that he s alive and living in Karachi comes as an embarrassment to the government of Pakistan that is trying to show to the world that it is fighting against the terrorists, including the Taliban. Nabil says that Mullah Omar is living comfortably and sheltered by local Mullahs who also make up an inner circle for him to give instructions. He added that Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour is acting like his right hand these days. He takes directions from Mullah Omar and places confidantes according to their ranks in the organization. Nabil feels that Mullah Omar is getting help from Pakistan’s army in carrying out his endeavours while remaining hidden from the eyes of the world.
This latest revelation may be a shocker for the world but India has all along maintained that Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan. This clearly shows the duplicity of the Pakistan government in its war against the Taliban. Sharif had vowed that Pakistan forces would not make a distinction between good and bad Taliban and target all Talibani forces out of the country. He had taken a resolve that the fight against terrorism would continue till the last terrorist on Pakistani soil is eliminated.
Survival of Mullah Omar is dependent upon his reclusiveness. After Osama was captured and killed, he has become very alert and does not receive couriers like Osama did. This is why it has become very difficult to trace his whereabouts.
