Arvind Kejriwal, the Aam Aadmi Party chief lashed out at Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday after he said that he would try to install the popular government in Delhi within the next few days.
The AAP chief was expressed apprehensions on Jung’s intentions and asked him whether he would seek for an adjournment in the Supreme Court tomorrow.
Kejriwal’s comments followed a statement issued by the Lt. Governor’s House today that said, ““In view of the president’s approval to explore the possibility of installing a popular government in Delhi, Najeeb Jung would be exploring the possibility with the leaders of all political parties over the next few days.”
The AAP convener said that the Jung should hold an all-party meeting today itself and reach a final conclusion by the evening, so that he can convey his decision to the apex court on Thursday.
He said, “It is unfortunate that LG is in active collusion with BJP and running the backdoor government for the BJP and acting as an agent of it rather than protecting the Constitution of India.
“We are in a democratic country and there should be a people’s government and elected government and LG should be trying his level best to have the elected government. Under BJP’s instruction, he is constantly delaying everything.”
Kejriwal also blamed the Lt. Governor of not doing anything in the past eight months to put an end to the political impasse in the national capital.
Earlier on Tuesday, the SC had criticized the ruling BJP government for employing strategies to postpone government formation Delhi, which has since February 17, been under President’s Rule.
The Supreme Court also conveyed its annoyance with the central government for postponing the process of government establishment in the Capital, even though President Pranab Mukherjee had given a nod to invite the BJP for the purpose.
The constitution bench of CJI HL Dattu, Justice A K Sikri, Justice RK Agrawal, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice H Chelameswar, asked the Centre, “Just before every date of the hearing, some statement is made about the attempt being made for the formation of a government but why things are not being done well before the date of the hearing?”
“Is it such a big issue for the Lt. Governor to take so much time to decide whether to do or not to do (a thing),” the Bench futher questioned, after being told that the President had given consent to Lt. Governor’s Najeeb Jung for inviting the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the single largest party, to form a popular government.
Seemingly pointing towards the number of legislators present in the BJP, the Bench asked, “Suppose Lt. Governor is going to invite the largest party (BJP). Are they in a position to form the government?”
At present, the BJP accompanied by ally Akali Dal’s sole MLA has a total of 29 legislators, and needs the backing of five more MLAs for proving majority in the Assembly.
The previous government in Delhi, headed by Arvind Kejriwal had resigned eight months ago, after the party’s flagship initiative, Jan Lokpal Bill, could not be passed owing to the opposition from Congress and BJP.
After that, President’s Rule was imposed in Delhi on February 17.
