After the first case of the deadly disease ebola was reported in New York, countries that usually witness a constant influx of foreign tourists, travellers and visitors are taking the much needed steps to prevent ebola from entering those countries.
India has also joined the list of nations stepping up their preparations to avoid the virus from make its way into the countries.
As per a leading newspaper and media reports, yesterday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued notices to various airlines for intensifying the vigilance over the progressively scattering disease.
As per the letter that the DGCA circulated among various airlines, “Airlines shall ensure that adequate number of Universal Precaution Kits are kept on board the aircraft operating international flights in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.”
The notification further said that the cabin crew should examine all the proformas and should also look for with symptoms similar to those of ebola patients, in passengers and send the doubtful cases to medical units for further check-up.
The directive also said that such passengers must be assigned a specific toilet, which others should not be allowed to use. Not only other passengers and travellers, but the cabin crew and other staff should also be allowed only limited contact with such passengers.
The aviation regulator circulated the guidelines have been adopted from the recommendations made by International Air Transport Association. It is the airport operators’ obligation to send the directions to foreign airlines.
Earlier, as per the DGCA’s instructions, airlines were carrying out in-flight announcements, requesting travellers to self-report any symptoms or signs of ebola. Additionally, the airlines were given the task of maintaining record of passengers travelling from West African countries and their health condition.
By issuing the latest communiqué, the DGCA has shown that it is fully aware of the perils of the rapidly spreading virus.
