Hacking an Xbox 360 Controller for Disabled People
You must have heard of software hacking but there’s also another form of hacking, which is known as hardware hacking. Over 2 years ago, there was a health conference in Boston where the AbleGamers Foundation invited a bunch of hardware hackers.
The objective of the conference was to promote handheld joypads for Xbox 360 fans, who belong to the disabled community. People like Steve Spohn had a lot of fun, despite of being restricted to a wheelchair and partial paralysis disease.
The contest at the conference lasted for 2 hours but some teams were able to develop a rough prototype of the Xbox 360 controller. Though the results were a little sketchy, but at least the buttons and analog sticks could be moved properly. You can also see the video of the AbleGamers Foundation on the internet.
Controllers are considered to be an important part of developing something for the disabled fellows. Most of the time, they are bound to their bed or the Wheelchair and a controller can really help them escape for a while.
Steve Spohn extended his help during the contest, by letting those teams know about the extent of his movement and different motions. The good thing was that, all buttons of the modified 360 controllers were literally blank. You can assign them any function which you feel comfortable with.
Some contestants developed controllers for the patients of muscular dystrophy disease. These controllers were installed in a T-Shirt at different key points, so that if the patient was to shrug his shoulders, the assigned keypad would react accordingly.
