After the U.N. Secretary General expressed that Pakistan and India should resolve the burning issues that have caused tensions and loss of peace in the regions around their Line of control (LoC), the U.S. Senators Angus King and Timothy Kaine have also expressed their concern over the matter.
During an interaction with the media in New Delhi on Thursday, the two Senators suggested that the United Nations could play a “bigger role” in the cla7th-Oct Tuesday. “I welcome the comments of the U.N. Secretary General calling for diplomatic efforts and dialogue to end the worrying situation between India and Pakistan,” Mr. King said, pointing at the statement issued by Stephanie Dujarric, spokesperson of the Secretary General. The statement asks Pakistan and India to “resolve their issues”.
Though the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon supports India’s call on bilaterally working out a solution to the LoC with their neighbours, the U.S. Senators may have gone a little over the top by soliciting the U.N. to play a greater role in the conflict and adding, “As a promoter of peaceful resolution of disputes the U.N. does a good job and in that sense their participation should be welcomed.”
This is in backing to the Pakistan’s repeated attempts to take the issue to an international platform while the U.N Secretary General prefers the two nations to solve their problem though a diplomatic and amicable discourse.
Mr. Kaine also said that Mr. Modi’s statement towards finding an effective resolution “very soon” was reassuring and encouraging. He also added that his visit to India has given him “opportunity to better understand India’s concerns”. During his visit, he met the defence officials and visited Mumbai to talk to various businessmen.
Both the U.S. officials, yesterday met Ajit Doval, the National Security Advisor for discussing various topics including the security status of the region.
The senator had reportedly met with Jalil Jilani, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the U.S., just before he left for India. As per the official statement cited in Pakistani news papers, Mr. Kaine, “appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to address terrorism, and assured of US support for peace and stability in the region.”
However, when the media persons asked them about Pakistani terrorist hideouts, Mr. King said that irrespective of it its origin, terrorism remains an issue of concern for the U.S and highlight how efficiently the country has dealt with the peril.
