In the era where black magic, witches, and superstitious beliefs dominated the peoples mind, there was man who rises like a phoenix and brought a revolution in the field of medicine which was devoid of all the supernatural.
Also remembered as the “father of modern medicine”, Hippocrates of Cos or Hippokrates of Kos was born on the island of Cos, off the southwest coast of Asia Minor, or present-day Turkey, around 460 B.C.
The Hippocratic medicine applied the Pythagorean theory which stated that the nature was made of four elements (water, earth, wind and fire), on to the body considering the four fluids or ‘humors’ (black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood) analogously. According to him the body’s harmony depended on the united camaraderie between these “four humors”.
A disease is a natural process and the signs and symptoms of it were caused by the natural reaction of the body to it was showed by Hippocrates through collected clinical data and experiments. According to him, the chief role of the physician was to overcome the metabolic imbalance by aiding the natural resisting power of the body to fight the disease.
Although Hippocrates’ anatomical knowledge was rather scant, he compensated it by his profound insights into human physiology and the sound reasoning. His surgical techniques for dislocations of the hip and jaw were unprecedented until the nineteenth century.
In terms of his treatments, Hippocrates had a very sensible approach. He emphasized on strengthening the body’s natural immune system to fight against the disease by encouraging people to have good diet, gymnastics, exercise, massage, hydrotherapy and sea bathing.
Hippocrates was the first physician to originate the disciplines of etiology and pathology by identifying the similarities and contrast among the diseases thereby forming a strong foundation for diagnosis and treatment.
The Hippocratic School of Medicine is one of the important historical contribution which changed the traditional means and modes of medicine in Greece. One of the many great achievements of Hippocrates include ‘The Hippocratic Corpus’ , the collection of ancient Greek medical works which is strongly related and associated with Hippocrates and his teachings.
Hippocrates had all the required attributes which are considered as ideal in a physician – he was wise, caring, compassionate and honest. He is most remembered today for coining the famous Hippocratic Oath, which set high ethical standards and a source of inspiration for doctors till today. The Hippocratic Oath contains the Pythagorean duties of justice, secrecy, respect for teachers and solidarity with peers.
