AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa’s absence from Tamil Nadu’s political front due to her imprisonment and trials has given the opposition new room to set its path straight for the 2016 Assembly elections.
The DMK, the apex rival of the AIADMK is trying to put together a good image now under the leadership of the party head M Karunanidhi and sorting out internal conflicts of the party that occurred after elections of 2011.
The party has since then seen many hardships, which include Karunanidhi’s son, M.K. Alagiri’s dismissal from the party after his flare-ups regarding leadership disputes.
The DMK had devastatingly accepted its defeat after the 2011 elections as it even failed to procure the ‘main opposition party’ title. But now the party is seeing some hope to get a stronghold on the situation.
The 18-years-old case lodged against Jayalalithaa was directed by Karunanidhi and senior party leader K Anbazhagan. Since the case has finally borne some results now, the DMK chief has taken it as a cue to resuscitate the party.
Karunanidhi’ recently said, “At a time when she was trying to finish off this movement (DMK), when all our comrades were tensed (about it), she herself walked into the trap, and it is a fact that she unwittingly helped in giving a push to this movement,”
He made these comments at a party meeting where he also said that Jayalalithaa has herself inflicted the conviction on her.
He also added that since she is now barred from electoral participation for at least 10 years, no matter whether she goes to High Court or Supreme Court, she will never come back in power now.
While Karunanidhi says these words, it doesn’t that mean that he is in a better situation that Jayalalithaa, if not worse. His party member A. Raja and his daughter Kanimozhi are facing probe in the ‘2G spectrum case’, in which his own wife is an important witness.
The party leader was earlier staying comparatively ‘low profile’ about Jayalalithaa’s situation as his party itself was facing the probe and the courts could announce a similar verdict anytime for him also. But somehow now he is more outspoken about his opponent, the AIADMK chief.
Apart from DMK, the BJP, which otherwise shares sound relations with Jayalalithaa, courtesy PM Narendra Modi’s equation with her; has revived its state unit to put up a fight against AIADMK in 2016.
Quite amusingly, BJP id trying to rope in actor Rajnikanth for getting majority support based on his stardom and clout in the upcoming elections. Since the actor had earlier been supportive of former PM Atal Behari Vajapayee’s initiatives, the hopes of BJP cannot be taken lightly.
With O. Pannerselvan holding the Chief Minister’s office, and the command being in Jayalalithaa’s hands from behind the bars, it will be interesting to see how the elections turnout to be in the end. For all the hue-and-cry that the party supremo’s conviction has created, and the way she swept 37 out of 39 seats in the past, whether she appears in the scene or works backstage, one cannot afford to undermine the lady’s power across the State.
