A day after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) withdrew support to the Congress government in Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan resigned as the Chief Minister on Friday, 26 September.
With just two lefts for assembly elections, post the resignation of Chavan, the BJP demanded imposition of President’s rule in the state.
The NCP announced the end of its 15-year-old alliance with Congress in Maharashtra on Thursday.
The development took place a day after Congress announced its first list of candidates for the Maharashtra Assembly elections. With this, both the Congress and the NCP will now contest all the 288 assembly seats separately on October 15.
The NCP also decided to quit the Congress-led government in the state, reducing the Congress government to a minority in the legislature.
The NCP had earlier out-performed Congress in the Lok Sabha Elections.
