Spain has a High Rate for Teenagers Falling Victim to Online Stalking
Recently a survey among 2510 adults and 2,000 children was conducted by the Spanish based computer security company: Panda Security SL. Emilio Castellote – Director of Product Marketing at Panda Security said that out of 3 young computer users in Spain, 1 of them is most likely to accept “friend” invites from strangers on Social networks across the internet.
The survey results also reveal that out of 100% users, only 47% of adults, parent or guardians are aware of their children being part of any social networking website. This survey was conducted in a long hauled time period, stretched between, January 2010 to May 2010. It has been exactly 3 years since the company reported its findings.
Over this much time period, Facebook has become a playground for online stalkers. However, due to several reports coming in from CNET and various other websites, a low set trend has also been noted where teens are not taking as much interest in social media websites as they used to.
Other interesting results were also uncovered through the survey. It was shown that fathers are mostly concerned about their kids being subject to certain degree of online harassment. Almost 99% of people use IMs, Facebook or other social networking mediums to remain in direct contact with known and unknown fellas. Among adults and kids, a hefty 59% of Barcelonan population is of those who are in the habit of accepting “friendly” invitations from complete strangers.
Emilio Castellote said that a special section of survey was dedicated to the parents. It was found out that 89% of mature adults use the internet for tracking information, 57% use it for work purposes and 26% of parents use the internet for downloading music and videos.
It was also noted that 79% of the parents speak to the minors about possible levels of risk and proneness to danger across the internet, while keeping in mind that any contact with “friendly” strangers is considered to be the greatest threat of all time.
According to Castellote, the purpose of the survey was to create awareness among people. Parents are especially advised to educate their children about the internet, rather than imposing bans on them.
