Okay, since we all know that President Obama is here for another term, so he probably thought of making a good use of Twitter hashtags. People thought that political hashtags were only meant to last until the recent elections but they are apparently being used for tax related purposes as well.

Recently, the hashtag #My2K went viral when Obama, or one of his representatives, started using it in an effort to get support for the current tax plan. The President wants you to use the #My2K hashtag to convince Congress to cut down on the Middle Class tax rates as the fiscal year is escalating towards turbulent times.

Obama likes to call it the “Bush Era Tax Policies” and he plans to make a few changes to it. For instance, those U.S. citizens, who are making more than $250,000 a year, are liable to follow the “new and improved” tax policies as part of a support program for the middle class. The White House argues that middle class Americans will lose more money if lawmakers are not that keen on extending tax cuts.

The President said, “I am asking Americans across the country to make their voice heard. Tell members of the Congress what a spike worth of $2,000 in tax would mean to you. Call them, write to them, email them, post on their Facebook wall or use your tweets with the #My2K hashtag.”

Within minutes, the #My2K tag became one of the most trending terms at Twitter. Some people used the tag to express their opinions – others used it for fun’s sake. Nonetheless, it was good while it lasted. The White House also got involved in the hashtag marathon by asking people about their opinions on the proposed tax plan by the President.

Seeing to the hashtag’s popularity, Obama opponents also used it to state their point of view. You can see the screenies below:

In the end, whatever that was left of Obama’s hashtag: #My2K, it was used by Twitter trolls. People somehow “confused” the tag with the highly rumored year 2000 computer bug: Y2k.

Let us know about your perspective on the upcoming tax plans.  By the way, Twitter is only used by 15% of the adult U.S. population, which is reported as mature audience. The rest of the Twitter users use the platform quite casually. Concerning the #My2K thing, if you want to be heard, please use Facebook, snail mail or phone calls to the Congress for that matter.
