Nalanda University, which was once burnt down by the Turkey Army’s invasion has now been revived and was inaugurated today by Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs. The world-over renowned centre for learning was burnt down 800 years ago.
Expressing her pride over having the opportunity to inaugurate the academic session of the university after a gap of over 800 years Swaraj said, “I am really upbeat that I got this opportunity…”
“As in the past the university would serve as ‘bridge and foundation’ in linking the country with the world through knowledge. It is wrong to say that today we are rejuvenating the 427 AD Nalanda University because tradition never dies … Nalanda is not just a university but a tradition. Nalanda University is a link between the past, present and future,” she further added the function held at the International Conventional Centre.
The event took place Rajgir town in Nalanda district, which is Buddhist pilgrimage town. The university is planned to be built in Rajgir, 12 km from the original 12th century site of the ancient Nalanda University
Among others, Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi and Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi were also present at the occasion. University officials stated that the former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who played a major role in setting up the university was not invited.
University Vice Chancellor Gopa Sabhrawal welcomed ambassadors of Singapore, Thailand and representatives of other countries to the university’s apex event. The classes at the university had started September 1st onwards with 15 students and half-a-dozen faculty members.
As per the plans, the university will be fully residential and will be completed by 2020. It will have seven schools, for post-graduate and doctoral students, offering courses in science, philosophy, spirituality and social sciences.
Nalanda University will act as a magnet to attract students from across the globe.
