After the launch of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaigns, the new scheme which had been in pipeline for a long time, ‘Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana’ was also finally launched on Saturday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the scheme, each Member of Parliament will take the responsibility of bringing about substantial physical and institutional development in three villages, and conclude the project by 2019.
The Prime Minister says that the execution of the project will result in absolute development of at least one village by each MP within the next two years. He also says that the initiative will require rigorous efforts and visionary leadership on part of each MP.
Briefing about the project at the event, he also said that he envisages that subsequently two more villages under each MP will come to be completely developed by 2019. Thereby, the ambitious plans perceives at least one village to be developed every year.
He also said that the whole initiative to develop even the remotest of the villages is a model that he created based on his own experience.
He further explained, “We are nearly 800 MPs. If before 2019 we develop three villages each, we reach nearly 2,500 villages. If in the light of this scheme, the states also create a similar scheme for MLAs, then 6-7000 more villages can be added,”
PM Narendra Modi also holds the view that development of one village in a block might even have a have a ‘viral’ effect and result in permeation of development and prosperity in other nearby villages also.
Elaborating more about the flexibility of the scheme, the Prime Minister spoke that MPs are free to adopt whichever villages they want to pick. The only stipulation remains that the village should neither be the MP’s own nor that of his in-laws.
Modi further said, “I also have to choose a village in Varanasi,”. He later added that he would go to the place and hold discussions to carefully pick his village.
Indicating that until now the country’s development models had been supply driven and that this scheme aims to furnish demand driven development, he said, “In Delhi, Lucknow or Gandhinagar, a scheme is prepared and then an attempt is made to inject it everywhere. Through this ‘Adarsh Gram’ (scheme), we want to shift from supply driven to demand driven model,”
Modi also added that he hopes these efforts to culminate into an atmosphere where every individual could hold pride in belonging to his or her own village.
