Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet top American CEOs on Monday, before his first ever meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama. After meeting former U.S. President Bill Clinton and the former U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, Modi will leave for Washington.
Modi will reportedly interact with eleven leading CEOs at this breakfast meeting. The list includes, Google’s Eric Schmidt, Citigroup CEO Michael Corbat, David M. Rubenstein of the Carlyle Group, Doug Oberhelman of Caterpillar Inc, Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo and Michael Ball of US-based global pharmaceutical company Hospira Inc and Kenneth C. Frazier of Merck and Co.
The meeting between the CEOs and the Prime Minister is a good opportunity for both sides to figure out how to prove beneficial for each other. The CEOs of these top eleven companies will try to understand Modi’s vision for the Indian economy and his vision as far as bringing FDI to India is concerned. CEOs said that they wanted more clarity in terms of the policies.
Modi also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netahnyahu, marking a distinct shift in India’s position on the West Asian Conflict. The two leaders talked about expanding collaborations and Netanyahu invited Modi to Israel.
During the launch of ambitious ‘Make in India’ last week, PM Modi had promised red carpet treatment for investors minus the red tape that has come to be associated with doing business in India.
‘Make in India’ campaign aspires to make India a manufacturing hub, and the government is pulling out all the halts to ensure a smooth sailing for investors, by setting up a dedicated cell to answer queries of business entities in a limited period of 72 hours. It will also closely scrutinise all regulatory processes to make them simple and reduce the burden of compliance.
During his speech at the Madison Square Garden, which was attended by more than 18,000 NRIs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the hearts of nearly 40 top U.S. lawmakers who described his words as ‘visionary and inspirational’.
When the PM called himself a small man who had reached there “selling tea” but intended to do “big things for small people”, the top lawmakers, the Congressmen, immediately connected with him.
Many described him as a charismatic figure, while others felt he was “destined to transform the nation”. His views on minimum governance also went well with the lawmakers. Henry C ‘Hank’ Johnson, a Congressman from Georgia said, “I see now why the people of India elected him.”
In words of Congressman Pete Olson from Texas, “He has got a vision. He has a plan to make it happen. Prime Minister Modi just swarmed this place like a rockstar.”
Ami Bera, the only Indian-American lawmaker in the current House of Representatives, described Modi’s speech as inspirational and visionary.
“Today the Indian-American community was celebrating. I look forward to continuing to work together to reinvigorate the U.S.-India relationship,” He said.
“It was great to hear his message of peace and friendship at his address to an energised crowd at the New York’s renowned Madison Square Garden,” said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.
