Jayalalithaa Knocks SC Doors

After the Karnataka High Court refused to grant her bail post the October 7 hearing, the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa took the appeal to Supreme Court on Thursday.

She has moved the SC against the High Court’s verdict of denying her a bail in the disproportionate assets case, in which the Bangalore’s special court had sentenced her to four years of jail, slapping a heavy fine of Rs.100 crore on her.

The High Court not only refused her the bail but also rejected any kind of suspension of the sentence given to her by the special court.

The AIADMK chief has pleaded through the application that being a 66-year-old woman with ailments, she cannot deal with the fact that her case might not be decided in the High Court until the end of the next four years.

Her alleged offences that come under the Prevention of Corruption Act, have got her punished with four years’ simple imprisonment, in the 18-years old case. As a result, she has been unseated from the position of the Chief Minister, which she held before she got arrested. She also automatically ceases to be an MLA now.

Among others who were accused along with her, there are V. Sudhakaran, Sasikala Natarajan and J. Elavarasi. They have also been imposed a Rs. 10 crore fine, each, along with the order of jail for four years.

Right now the celebrated former CM is in a jail in Bangalore as the renowned senior counsel, Ram Jethmalani fights the legal battle for her.
