All those Mac OS buffs can gather around for this week’s tips on enhancing their Mac OS related experience. The Finder feature provides some great ways of creating new folders but it doesn’t provide an easy way of creating new files. Over the last few days, people have written to us, asking about how to create new files in the Mac Finder section. I just decided to wrap it all up through one ‘How To’ post.

You can start off by launching the Automator – and from then on, select Service in the Chooser. Now you can see a small window of your Automator that lets you set the Service Recieves Selected drop down menu. Select Files or Folders and then you can drag the following actions into your work area. This next part of the instructions requires a bit of scripting. Just follow them carefully and you are good to go.

  • Run AppleScript:

After encountering the Utilities section of the Actions Library, go ahead and paste the following script in the code box and once you are done, you can click the compile button;

On command line – Run {input, parameters}, set the current path to insertion location as text. Set “x” to “POSIX” path of the current path and end tell return is going to be x end run.

-          Down below, you’ll see Set Value of a Variable, create a new variable through the drop down menu.

-           Follow that with the New Text File action and drag your newly created variable from the Variable panel, to the bottom of your Automator window.

So why do you want to do this hectic thing in the first place? Well, consider this little venture as a nice alternative to the usual Mac workflow experience. Because you are able to create a file, wherever you want it to be created, this lets you in on a customized approach to using the Mac OS.

Besides, you can also open the file through whichever application you like.
