It was a national record when Ganpatrao Deshmukh, 88, won his 11th assembly election on Sunday.
He has been representing Sangola seat in Solapur district and had won the title of second such legislator in 2009, to have 10 times, after DMK Chief M Karunanidhi, who had also made equal number of success stories.
Deshmukh has been representing the Sangola for the past 54 years and is a Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) politician.
Though NCP had not raised a candidate against him from the assembly, Shiv Sena did. However, Sena candidate Shahajibapu Patil was crushed by Deshmukh as he scored 94,374 votes as compared to 69,150 of Patil. Therefore, winning by 25,224 votes.
These were his 13th assembly elections, as he was first voted as the MLA in 1962. Barring two occasions, which are 1972 and 1995 elections, he has since then won ten polls in total.
In the year 2012 he was honoured by the House and the government for having accomplished 50 years in the Assembly.
Though he was on opposition benches for most part of his career, worked extensively in his constituency which has long been drought-prone, he was twice selected as a minister also.
When Sharad Pawar parted ways from Congress and created Progressive Democratic Front government in 1978, he was appointed the minister of state for a very small period, which was his first stint as a minister.
After that, in 1999, he was for the second time made the minister when PWP extended support to the Congress-NCP alliance.
A political analyst from Solapur, Arun Khore threw some light on the career of politician that has always brought him to power and said, “Ganpatrao Deshmukh has a clean image and is available to the people 24×7. There are no corruption charges against him and he is not greedy for power. Deshmukh has set up a cotton mill, which is the only mill in the state, which is run by women. They do a lot of things for empowerment of women.”
According to media reports that recorded Mohan Sonalkar, a village resident, from Medhshinge, he said, “In our constituency, we have two major communities – Dhangar and Maratha. But Deshmukh saheb is the only exception who gets support from all communities. Anybody can visit their office with an issue and they try to solve the problem. There is a no law and order problem in this constituency.”
