When a doctor said that your child or teen has “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder” (ADHD), the first response from his or her concerned parent is, “What do I do now?”
As a parent, it is important to create better home and school environments that improve your child’s chances for success. The earlier the condition is addressed, the more likely it is to be able to prevent school and social failure and associated problems such as underachievement and poor self-esteem that may lead to delinquency or drug and alcohol abuse.
The child need attention and early intervention holds the key to positive outcomes for him
The first ADHD symptoms may appear at an early age (between 3 and 6 years old). However, ADHD is most often found and treated between 7 and 9 years old. Some ADHD symptoms like hyperactivity might get better when the child grows older. However, symptoms may not disappear completely and may continue into adulthood.
ADHD results from a dysfunction in certain areas of the brain where the majority of cases are inherited. It is important to understand that ADHD is not caused by poor parenting or a chaotic home environment, although the home environment can make the symptoms worse.
Along with ADHD it is not uncommon for children to have more than one learning disability and/or emotional problem. It is important to get a full evaluation from your doctor before deciding the course of the treatment.
ADHD does not have a cure but there are treatments which might help to improve symptoms. Change in diet, use of supplements or vitamins, and others can help.
