With the Shiv Sena winning a respectable number of seats in Maharashtra, MNS standing stranded and BJP standing out to be the single largest party, there’s bound to be an ego war. A conflict in which everybody tries to maintain their respective ‘image’.
But the way the BJP has emerged victorious single handed is commendable. It’s a known fact that this is the first time for the party in the State, to win so many votes. Whether it is BJP President Amit Shah’s meticulous campaigning or the Prime Minister’s inarguable oration that has made the party so popular, or the interplay of both, whatever it is, it paid off.
And as far as Amit Shah’s well scripted decisions are concerned, the one he took along with the PM’s consent to break off with old ally, Shiv Sena also saw success.
The situation now is that both the Thackeray brothers are in a tussle. Even though Shiv Sena wasn’t beaten as badly as Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) was, it has still experienced a setback.
Uddhav Thackeray, Shiv Sena chief had very well carried out its split with BJP, now is the second in the league of parties that contested and might to have to join BJP to sketch out its own success and maintain popularity and grip in the State.
However, the Sena leader has maintained as of now, “We can reply only if they [BJP] seek our support. If they want to go with the NCP, they are free to do so,”
The BJP needs 23 seats to get a simple majority to form its government in the State. The Sena can expect to join hands with the party and work on respectable terms, as the BJP has always stayed away from firing any direct criticisms on the Sena, even though the later has never minced words while denigrating the BJP.
The other Thackeray cousin, Raj Thackeray stands nowhere in the list of alliances and incumbencies. The way it carried out ‘pro-Maharashtra-and-anti-everybody-else’ strategy, could only get him an EC notice, and almost no seats. Caught up in its own ideologies and plans, Raj Thackeray’s claim that States should be left to regional parties only and the National parties should be kept out of their way, possibly explained the party’s limited political prowess and insufficient capability to help take the State to a bigger, countrywide platform.
However, the party’s existence is in question now, as despite its efforts and propaganda it could only win one seat.
Despite lower voter turnout in Mumbai, BJP grabbed 15 seats out of the 36, whereas Sena could bag only 14. In Marathwada, which is Sena stronghold, it won just 15 out of 46 seats. In Vidarbha, where it opposed for statehood of the region, it could manage just 4 out of 62 seats, had there been a different perspective held by Sena, it could have easily won a lot more seats there. In the Konkan-Thane region, the party won 14 out of 32, which is a satisfactory number.
The Party created an indentation in the Jat throttleholds of Hissar, Bhiwani and Jind.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will now be having its first ever CMs in Maharashtra and Haryana. Such a victory is bound to give more power to the PM who swept away so many votes and hearts in both the States with due help of BJP President Amit Shah.
Amit Shah recently said, “For those who thought the Modi wave is over, this is proof that it’s still a tsunami that can crush all competition. People of India consider Narendra Modi their undisputed leader.” said Mr Shah.
At the same time, it also translates into lesser power in the hands of party’s state leaders and more domination by national leadership.
The popular victory of the party gives it an even better scope in Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand elections, where the polls will take place in the coming few months.
Apart from there, the party might also announce mid-term polls in Delhi, which is presently under central rule.
All said and done, BJP could still not get a simple majority in Maharashtra and therefore it can still not be called an absolute victory for the party. But by sweeping double the number of seats than its closest opponent, Shiv Sena, which happens to be more popular than BJP in the State, the party has written its establishment all over the country in strong ink.
As the BJP has managed to rope two more States under its saffron flag, the party has as much as six chief ministers, managing large and important States. It has alliances in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab already. The BJP’s determinations to have stronghold on the terms of engagement with associates, received a further impetus with the outcomes of the elections.
