I remember three days ago, I was covering a report on Delicious’ future. Yahoo was giving it a hard time and all I know is that they announced that Delicious is going to have to find a new home. Awww… that’s so heartbreaking. Delicious has been working underneath Yahoo’s hood since 2005, but ever since Yahoo came up with an announcement pertaining to “sun setting” a number of products, the public reaction hasn’t been good so far.

So how did Delicious reach this point? There were a number of reports made by Yahoo former engineers and employees that shed some light on the failure of acquisitions. Honestly, since 2005, Yahoo hasn’t come up with anything interesting, especially when compared to Google… and Bing (perhaps).

Take a look at a blog post report by a former engineer (Neil Kandalgaonkar), who used to work with Upcoming and Delicious. “If they were supposed to revitalize Yahoo, they weren’t treated that way.

They weren’t all combined into any one thing, even though they all relied on social networking and shared the same kind of user base. Instead they were parceled out to different parts of Yahoo where they were subordinate to the existing hierarchy and agenda.

(Flickr was the exception though, in that they carved out a separate role for themselves, and absorbed Yahoo Photos rather than the other way around.) Arguably the Upcoming acquisition is the only one that “revitalized” anything as Leonard Lin made it his mission to work on Yahoo’s culture.”

Looks like Yahoo needs to take Acquisitions 101 classes because the current situation clearly provides a picture of a company that bogged its acquired startups. Meanwhile, in related news, Chad Dickerson – Former Yahoo Developer said, “In my experience, entrepreneurs moving into Yahoo!, often got stuck doing PowerPoints about “strategy” instead of writing code and shipping products.”

About Nikki Malik

Nikki Malik brags about writing a bazillion books, including several best selling novels. We haven't seen any of them though. By the way, she also talks about being a winner of virtually every award that the literary community has to offer. Nikki modestly notes that: "It's not that other writer's are less talented than I am...there are a lot of good writers out there. Bunches of 'em. It's just that I seem to write at this different--some might say higher--level than everybody else. That's really all it is."
