Rumors circulating the next gen console’s integration with TV are circulating online. If this happens, the Cable TV era will be revolutionized once and for all.

If you think that the future of Televisions is here, I implore you to think again. For the record, Smart TV is not the “future” of TVs; things go way beyond that. Look at what Microsoft 720 has been up to, and you’ll find out that there is a strong probability about the console’s potential to convert typical TV viewership to something else.

Over the last few years, Microsoft’s prodigy: the Xbox 360 has overseen a lot of changes. I admit that the PlayStation 3 console was an old contender and way ahead of Microsoft at the time when the 360 was released, but things changed soon. Maybe Microsoft borrowed a few ideas for a rehash, but the fact is that the Xbox 360 is not merely a gaming console these days.

‘The Verge’ already published an article concerning Xbox 720 Durango announcement. This new console is expected to be released by the end of November or early 2014. With this thing in mind, Microsoft has been reportedly busy with inserting Cable TV ports and HDMI In ports in the highly anticipated device.

As a matter of fact, last week was pretty moving for Xbox 720 Durango fans because The Verge’ published some stuff about the consoles compatibility with cable TV. The crux of this report is that Microsoft is still in “planning” phases. Someone probably heard the guys at the company’s gaming department jabbing about Durango’s live TV support, and that’s how a rumor was created.

The functionality will work by taking a cable box signal and passing it through to the Xbox via HDMI, allowing Microsoft’s console to overlay a UI [user interface] and features on top of an existing TV channel or set-top box.

Now if you recall correctly, Google TV did something similar in the past. They have the HDMI style pass through port and cable combination, but it was not the game changer. So how does a similar idea make Xbox Durango 720 better than the rest of its competitors?

For one reason, the average overall number of gamers has been on the rise. Secondly, Xbox is introducing applications – and that too has been happening on a constant rate. Maybe Microsoft is going a little too fast right now, but the future of Cable TV will be summarized as apps.

Here’s a fine reason for you to believe in Xbox Durango 720’s TV integration. You have a few apps, such as Netflix and HBO Go on consoles these days. Even Playstation 3 is also lined up with applications of similar nature, which is the sole reason why gamers simply subscribe, connect to the internet and keep watching endless TV programs.

Cable Providers are Not Offering What Console Gamers are Looking for:

The cable TV network, on the other hand, does have its array of apps, but it is not entirely perfect. Cable TV guys do not specialize in app development, which is why they will always be a step behind. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have assortment of video services, such as:

  • NetFlix
  • Vudu
  • Hulu
  • Hulu Plus
  • Amazon Video
  • HBO Go

With a simple HDMI cable input, there is a possibility that the Xbox Durango 720 will grant complete access to the entire repository of cable TV channels. Pay TV is on its way out; it is time to welcome next gen consoles and the onslaught of cool new apps that they’ll be bringing along.

Stay Tuned!

About Nikki Malik

Nikki Malik brags about writing a bazillion books, including several best selling novels. We haven't seen any of them though. By the way, she also talks about being a winner of virtually every award that the literary community has to offer. Nikki modestly notes that: "It's not that other writer's are less talented than I am...there are a lot of good writers out there. Bunches of 'em. It's just that I seem to write at this different--some might say higher--level than everybody else. That's really all it is."
