Verizon Employee Fired for Secretly Outsourcing Work
Verizon recently fired an employee for secretly outsourcing his work to Chinese freelancers. “Bob”, otherwise known as the quiet dude you wouldn’t want to look at twice, turned out to be a brilliant bastard.
Verizon has not exactly revealed the name or full credentials of this employee. Maybe they did, but while researching, I did not find the guy’s real name. Or perhaps, Verizon actually honored his privacy and kept his name a secret so that he may not have trouble finding a new job. Who knows?
What I do know is that recently dubbed as “Bob”, this software developer was allegedly involved in outsourcing all of his work to overseas fellows. China, it was; the country where people would do work for pennies. In Bob’s case, he was paying 20% of his net income as salary to freelancers.
According to the case study presented by Verizon’s online security team, the perpetrator was reportedly quite fond of shopping at eBay, hanging out at Reddit and watching videos during work hours. Not that it is a bad thing but when you are constantly logged into these websites, rather than working, there’s definitely something fishy going on.
In case you are thinking what this man did during his office hours? Well, he did nothing at all! In fact, his superiors always admired his work quality. Only if they knew that it was actually Verizon’s Chinese allies that were helping all this time, things would have been different perhaps. I wonder if Verizon is going to fill Bob’s vacant seat by hiring someone from China.
Anyhow, the company’s official had to say this about Bob the sneaky Sonuva-Gun:
Mid-40s software developer versed in C, C++, Perl, Java, Ruby, PHP, Python, etc. Relatively long tenure with the company, family man, inoffensive and quiet. Someone you wouldn’t look at twice in an elevator.
How was Bob Caught?
They checked his IP logs. Even though Bob had found a way to make log-ins appear as they were actually from China, some of his ruse was to FedEX and his RSA token to the overseas country. His VPN activities revealed a lot of traffic logs pointing to Shenyang – China.
What’s even more interesting is that this man had been outsourcing his work and other company’s work as well. It was a bold move, and he did make a lot of extra cash, but it was ethically wrong. Verizon has not spilled any details about “retrieving” the cash that this employee had been making behind their backs.
