Twitter Now Being Used by Courts in England and Wales
According to a judge, who had a say in the landmark decision making process, Twitter can now be used in courtrooms in England and Wales. The first application of Twitter is expected to oversee the famous WikiLeaks case that’s currently portraying Julian Assange as a perpetrator. To further comment the Twitter usage criterion, Lord Chief Justice – Igor Judge said that the decision to use Twitter in courtrooms will depend on the case to case basis.
That being said, the Twitter aid will be permissible in some cases, while in others it won’t be. As much as Twitter can aid in a case’s progress, there is a certain degree of risk involvement too.
The greatest risk would come in criminal trials where witnesses and opposing parties will be able to eavesdrop on the current case, while staying outside of the courtroom. This way, the sense of secrecy will be compromised to a great degree.
The Judge said, “The judge has an overriding responsibility to ensure that proceedings are conducted consistently with the proper administration of justice, and so as to avoid any improper interference with its processes.
There is no statutory prohibition on the use of live text-based communications in open court. But before such use is permitted, the court must be satisfied that its use does not pose a danger of interference to the proper administration of justice in the individual case.”
But then again, the Judge also thinks that Twitter can be worked on through a handheld device that won’t emit any disturbing sound at all. Hence, Twitter will have no impact on a court’s proceedings at all.
