No Signs of Child Labor – Samsung is Sure of it
‘China Labor Watch’; a welfare organization in favor of children rights, has been giving a hard time to several manufacturers inside the country. Back in August, when Samsung was suspected of being involved in child labor, ‘China Labor Watch’ activists “convinced” the cell phone giant for an audit.
It was found out that HEG Electronics, one of Samsung suppliers for electronic equipment and parts, was employing not only minors but also making them work overtime for a small increment in salary. Since ‘China Labor Watch’ has imposed strict policies against child labor, it practices zero tolerance for any company that is known for breaking the rules.
Samsung officials had more than enough reasons to take a look at the company’s work ethics. They sat down, discussed and agreed to an audit. It went on for 4 weeks, while significantly pointing out that among the 105 Samsung suppliers across China; some of them were identified for their inadequate practices.
According to Samsung officials, this statement was recently passed to the public: “The audit identified several instances of inadequate practices at the facilities, including overtime hours in excess of local work force regulations, management of supplier companies holding copies of labor contracts and the imposition of a system of fines for lateness or absences.”
The media and public hail ‘China Labor Watch’ as an outspoken and authoritative source for Chinese labors. They have penalized Foxconn for compromising the policies against child labor. Ever since its last audit, Foxconn has been keeping up a nice front by cutting down on fake IDs, firing underage employees and seeing that the overtime policy coincides with increased wage rates.
Samsung, on the other hand, is now demanding for its suppliers to buy machines that detect fake IDs. Seeing to the degree of poverty in China, a lot of children willingly try to get a job at an early stage in their lives. Some of these kids are the only “grown up” member of the house. Since they have to feed a lot of mouths, they revert to showing fake IDs to manufacturer companies in hopes for getting employment.
However, ‘China Labor Watch’ does not favor such actions. Therefore, all companies will have to follow the policies without any Ifs, Ands or Buts.
