HBO, Netflix and ESPN Punching International Travelers in the Nutsicles
At the time of writing this post, I am on one of my ventures, sitting at a friend’s place in New Delhi – India. There was no special reason for me to be in India, especially if you are thinking that I just went there for the sake of writing an article.
I flew to India because I was missing some old buddies. The journey from the U.S. to India, for me, has always been exciting. Even though I left my family back in New York, being in India didn’t make me home sick. All thanks to great apps, such as: Apple FaceTime and Viber, I was able to say hello to my mom n’ dad.
The only part that really sucked about this entire trip was that my Netflix, ESPN and HBO Go subscriptions did not work in India. It just happens that the insecure Hollywood big shots have issues with copyrights in overseas countries but why do they even bother introducing services when they can’t be used outside the United States?
Especially when you think about the future of Netflix subscribers in 2013, I think it is simply unacceptable for us to bear with these mundane problems. So what if you are not in the U.S. for the time being. Maybe you are a casual international traveler from America. You are on the move and you want to enjoy your time through the good old Netflix subscription…
You have paid for these services. Therefore, the companies have to find a way to make them available to you whenever you are not in the U.S. It isn’t too difficult for these companies to “program” a way for their paying users to access available services. I tried changing my IP address for HBO Go and Netflix but it did not work well.
Now that I think of it, what does the word: “Go” even imply in ‘HBO Go’? Watch your favorite programs on the Go? Is that what it means? Well, listen HBO, I was on the “GO” and I am definitely not able to access your services when I am in India or any other country that’s not the U.S.
In the meantime, the fat cats at your corporate offices will keep on billing me for stuff that I am not even able to watch! Is that fair? When a lot of American citizens are traveling across the globe, there has to be a mode of service from HBO, ESPN and Netflix that works for such individuals.
By the way, don’t forget to take a look at the following HBO Go image. The irony is killing me!
