Excessive Facebook Usage Linked to Mentally Retarded Behavior
This just in from psychologists, who are probably going out of business these days. They say that a person’s mental state and Facebook profile is a gateway to his or her personality. Thanks to the kind courtesy of knuckleheads at the University of Missouri, a study was conducted on more than 200 college students who were tested and scored on:
- Social Anhedonia
- Perceptual Aberration
- Magical Ideation
- Extraversion
- Paranoia Tendencies
Of course, a lot of us don’t understand what the above terms mean. Maybe some of us do, but let me start with Social Anhedonia. It is described as the “diminished experience of positive emotion for the social stimuli.”
Down the road, we’ve got “Perceptual Aberration” and “Magical Ideation”, which relate to psychotic like distortions and unusual beliefs. Some experts even go as far as to say that a victim of Perceptual Aberration or Magical Ideation would create an imaginary image of himself/ herself, or others, and then project it to online social media platforms.
Researchers found out that those people, who excessively use Facebook, are mostly suffering from Social Anhedonia. Such individuals don’t have a lot of friends in real life. In fact, in real life, they are quite the opposite of their Facebook profiles. This is to say, if you are friends with a girl who’s very talkative and friendly – she might turn out to be an introvert person.
Likewise guys pretending to be girls are, well… weirdos you probably don’t want to hang around in real life. Or maybe you do, it’s your choice. The University of Missouri researchers also noticed a strong link between extraversion, number of Facebook friends of a person and number of self-photos in his/her album.
Doctor Elizabeth Martin, the Study Leader of this research, said, “The beauty of social-media activity as a tool in psychological diagnosis is that it removes some of the problems associated with patients’ self-reporting.
For example, questionnaires often depend on a person’s memory, which may or may not be accurate. By asking patients to share their Facebook activity, we were able to see how they expressed themselves naturally. Even the parts of their Facebook activities that they chose to conceal exposed information about their psychological state.“
However, a person’s mental state cannot be judged by his/ her Facebook activities. In some cases, they can be – but mostly, it is not like that. I say that these psychologists are either going out of business, or they have developed a nasty case of stalking people, which makes them a psycho as opposed to normal people at Facebook.
By the way, I have embedded the study results below. Feel free to read them and draw your conclusions.
