Distracting Beach Babes – The Famous Scareware Tactic at Facebook
Looks like those “Distracting Beach Babes” ads and a variety of scareware headlines have been affecting the overall user experience at Facebook. People either get horny at the sight of those fake ad pics, or they are too scared to discover that an ad is telling them about XXXX number of viruses in the computer. One way or another, someone clicks those ads, and goes offsite to a location where the victim’s computer is left in a vulnerable state.
Facebook users were attacked through a rogue Facebook application through a sex oriented video, as bait. The scam is spread across Facebook, by the title: ‘Distracting Beach Babes‘ and it includes a link to a set of malicious applications.
Facebook experts said that whoever clicks the link — is asked to allow the application to access their profiles. After the approval, the users are instructed to download a so called “update” for FLV player or Windows Media Player to view the video.
Whoever installed those updates opened up a Pandora box in his/her PC because users reported about;
- Random restarts
- File duplication
- Trojans
- Slow performance
- Dumping physical memory errors and tons of other issues.
As part of a side campaign, Facebook users have been warning each other about this virus, through messages. This kind gesture has significantly dropped the number of people getting affected by the virus, and also, the level of horniness fell down a few notches as well.
