T

he idea of Twitter getting acquired by Facebook or Google is scary enough to give me heebie-jeebies. Plus, if Twitter is bought by a big corporate sector, it’d change a lot of things… and tweets too L In case you’re wondering why I’m talking about a Twitter Vs. Anonymous acquisition, read on…

Twitter Acquisition in Question | The NationalI read it in The Wall Street Journal last Wednesday. There was a story that said that Twitter guys have been having “low level” discussions regarding a possible merger/business acquisition. If it works out, the company will be sold to Facebook or maybe Google, which in both cases is really going to be irritating for a lot of people out there.

Twitter’s current worth is estimated to be somewhere between $8 – $10 Billion. This company is being backed up by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers. Obviously Kleiner has been having some sort of argument with Twitter, which is why they’re thinking of pulling the plug. That would further mean that Kleiner Perkins officials will demand their money to be paid back. Can Twitter come up with a couple of Billion $$$ to save the company? I don’t know.

But on the other side of the picture, we have Google and Facebook. Both latter companies are sort of arch rivals. Ever since Facebook cut some deals with Microsoft Bing, Google has been acting like a little cry-baby. Regardless of that issue, the big question still hangs in the balance:

What will Twitter become after the potential acquisition?

Wall Street Journal officials said that this discussion is sort of following a low profile. It means that there’s possibly a hoax like element linked to it. But we can’t really call it a hoax. There might be a possibility of an ongoing merger or an acquisition related negotiation.

Facebook doesn’t have $8 – $10 Billion to buy Twitter. Let’s be honest, Facebook is rich but not super-duper rich to make such a huge investment. Facebook has made small level cash deals but something not as big as Twitter acquisition.

Google is hungry for a little bit of Social Media action. Google Buzz didn’t go so well, so if they manage to buy Twitter, maybe things for Google will turn out real good. However, the overall experience for existing Twitter users will probably turn out to be something entirely different.

There is a possibility that Twitter may become much better. There is a possibility that Twitter may turn out to be a pain in the butt. If Google decides to bring in Google Adsense on Twitter, it’d become an advertisement jungle. There will be less Tweets from actual people and more Tweets from 3rd party companies, ad bots and God knows what else.
