Apple’s Vice President Vs. Google Nexus 7 Vs. iPad Mini

When a high ranking official from Apple shows concern about Android products on the rise, you know that there’s something fishy going on. Recently, Apple’s Vice President of Marketing: Phil Schiller talked a lot about the growing momentum of Android devices. During the iPad Mini press conference, Schiller seemed to be spending an unusual amount of time talking about Android devices.

What does this situation imply? Does it mean that Apple is looking at potentially tough times in days to come? Does Apple need to change its marketing strategies, product manufacturing rate or anything that might kill the competition? If there’s one thing for sure; it is Google’s accelerated rate of success these days.

iPad Mini Conference or Android Conference?

Even though Apple joined hands with audience to talk about the iPad Mini, the company representatives seemed preoccupied with Android based devices mostly. It was as if they were trying to justify the fact the iPad still is and will be way ahead of any tablet that Google has to introduce.

The zinger started when Phil Schiller took over and said, “Okay, others have tried to make tablets smaller than the iPad and they have failed.” Later on he mentioned Google’s Nexus 7 as a device that is hell of a lot different than the iPad or the iPad Mini.

What matters most is the stuff that Apple didn’t highlight about Google Nexus 7. Here are some things that you need to know about Nexus 7 vs. the iPad Mini. Maybe Google’s device isn’t that bad after all…

Nexus 7 Screen Size against Apple iPad Mini Screen Size:

The screen size debate has a lot of room to cover. It is a big elephant; perhaps a fat lie that Schiller needs to justify himself against. To be honest, Apple is right about iPad Mini’s screen size, since it dons 7.9 inches.

On the other hand, the Nexus 7 screen size is 7 inches. Oh boy, there is a small difference there but does it really matter? Not too many days ago, one of Apple’s representative in the iPhone 5 premier video, was talking about how they are looking to improve the existing features in the iDevices.

If we are to apply the screen size theory here, we can see that Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 have larger screen size as compared to the iPhone 5. The S3 has 4.8 inches of real estate to show off, whereas the iPhone 5 only has 4 inches to itself.

Behind the screen, another thing that really matters is the resolution. The iPad Mini supports a maximum of 1024 x 768. On the other hand, despite of its “small” screen size, the Nexus 7 resolution is 1280 x 800. A lot of people argue that resolution is slightly more important than the screen size of a device. Schiller Says the iPad Mini has More Web Browsing Space:

To demonstrate the iPad Mini web browsing space, Phil Schiller opened the Guggenheim Museum website. He also claimed that the open tabs in a browser window are not part of the overall browsing experience, when comparing screen real estate. Of course, he had a point but some users beg to differ.

If Apple’s claims concerning the screen browsing estate of the iPad Mini are to be taken into account, then we can also say something in Nexus’ favor, can’t we? Just because Apple says the Nexus has 49% less browsing space against the iPad Mini, it doesn’t add up. Trust me, I am not being biased here.

People have blamed me a lot of times as a biased writer, journalist, editor etc. But if you were to ask your fellow community users about Android browsing experience, there is a probability that they’ll show likeness for the soft keys across the bottom of the screen. These keys/ tabs help end users to hop from one page, or one app, to another.

Phil Schiller Claims that Android Tablet Apps are Inferior to iPad Apps:

Again, if I want to be a biased writer, I’d normally take one side here. However, I have left the decision to you. Generally when you compare the iPad applications to the Android tablet applications, you will see the lacking areas on both sides.

Some apps are good; some apps are not good. Android tablet apps can use some polish at times. This happens when the Android developer in question takes screen scaling into account. Not a while ago, Android development platforms were not unified. Most of the developers were creating things for different versions of the Android OS.

Meanwhile, Apple has defined an outline for developers; their playground where things can be created. Now that Android has unified Ice Cream Sandwich as its OS for tablets, we will more likely see better applications. I said, “better”, which doesn’t intentionally imply that I hate Android apps for tablets.

Apple thinks that Nexus 7 Doesn’t Have a Beautiful Body as Compared to the iPad Mini:

Okay Mr. Schiller and Co. this is just your or the company’s opinion. In some instances, the iPad Mini looks glossy and beautiful with its aluminum finish. Yes, I have to give credit where credit is due. However, what if someone says that he/she doesn’t like that aluminum body?

What if people prefer holding Nexus 7 because it feels right due to rubberized textured? You know how the iDevices are famous for slipping off suddenly.

Processors – Here we Go!

Tough competition here again. The iPad Mini is all about the new A5 processor, which is cool but not in a lot of ways. Apple didn’t disclose geometric means, stress test results or exact numbers but on paper, when we compare the A5 with the Nexus 7 processor, lots of things come into perspective.

First of all, the Nexus 7 houses Quad Core Tegra 3 processor. Despite of being a 4 month old tablet, it is still doing better against current competitor products. Another thing which needs to be taken into consideration is that Google is going to replace the existing 16Gb version of the Nexus 7 with a new and improved 32Gb edition.

The interesting bit is that while doing so, Google Nexus 7 is going to retain its price of $249. Can we say the same for Apple iPad Mini? Surely the iPad Mini will have many versions in the market. However, Apple will probably never fix the price. The company is known for increasing or decreasing the bar when it comes to milking prospects for money.

The decision is up to you. If you love Apple, no one can stop you from buying Apple products. If you love Google, we can’t hold you back from buying Google products. Whatever you do man, I wish you good luck.
