Joe Lieberman, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security recently “ordered” President Obama to publish advisory guidelines on a Cyber Security bill. It is feared that an attack similar to 9/11 is imminent, and that the government needs to put up its defenses to protect common U.S. citizens.

According to Lieberman, in one of his letters to Obama, “Countless national security leaders from your Administration and the previous Administration have made clear that the threat from cyber-attack is similar to the threat we faced from terrorism on September 10, 2001 — the danger is real and imminent, yet we have not acted to defend against it.”

Continuing, Lieberman writes, “We know our adversaries are already stealing valuable intellectual property and exploiting our critical infrastructure — those systems that control our water, electricity, transportation, finance, and communications systems — to prepare for attack.”

The above suggestions were submitted as guidelines in federal legislation recently. However, they were voted out, which caused them to derail last month. As of now, the Democrats are insisting on new cyber security guidelines, which are of course, expected to be opposed by Republicans.

Rivalry aside, people from both sides think that an adequate set of measures has to be taken into account to better safeguard the nuclear power plants, key pieces of national infrastructure, electric grid systems, canals, water supplies and anything that runs on the basis of computers. All of this is happening in an attempt to oppose hackers and cyber spies in the long run.

It is expected that President Obama will pass a bill in favor of this order. People, who have been working close with the President on this cyber security issue, have reported seeing draft copies of the document. One of the spokesperson says, “The executive order tells people who are in charge of implementing new changes as suggested by Lieberman, to go forth and do so.”
