Watch Out Your Facebook Likes – You Could Go to Prison!
The cybercrime prevention act in Philippine is probably taking Facebook way too serious. According to ‘Access’ a nomad pressure group, ‘Liking a comment, commenting underneath a comment or re-tweeting a message” could hold you liable as a supporter. Therefore, anything that is offensive to the integrity of the country or the said cause for that matter, can send you to jail for an indefinite amount of time.
Wow, now I am going to have to be extra careful while using Facebook in Philippine. However, ‘Access’ guys are just stating the law as stated back in the giant Cybercrime Prevention Douch-Baguette Manual# 101. The problem with laws is that once you have done something wrong, only then you get to know where you have erred. No one bothers to correct your mistakes while you are in the middle of committing them…
For argument’s sake, if you have got something like: ‘I am not a huge Jesus Christ fan’ written down as your latest status message in a Facebook Philippine based account, you have pretty much said it all. The diehard Jesus lovers can and probably will make every effort to send you to the slammer.
Apparently, it seems that the Cybercrime Prevention Law was made with clear and fine intentions. On the contrary, you know how the heretics work. Make a law and watch some lunatic taking it way too far in his head. Ladies and gentlemen, I guess that’s exactly how the inquisition era started back in the days of Maleus Malefacarum (The Witch’s Hammer).
Sometimes people just hit the Like button as the new Unlike or a sign of hatred. Maybe if Facebook could introduce a new “Don’t Like” or “Not Cool” button; it would make things and puny laws a lot easier to figure out. According to Philippine officials, the recent law is legit enough to take down a website or block it without anything as much as a court ordered decision.
It is quite hard to believe that sometimes Philippine’s internet services companies can behave with a child’s notion. As of these days, elections are nearing the country’s political atmosphere. Maybe the law was held up to zip out online Protestants and supporters against someone or something in particular.
